Discount, Margin & Markup Calculator — Sale Price & Profit

Twenty percent off $100 — is that $80, and what did you really save? This free calculator turns an original price plus discount percent into the sale price, you-save amount and effective rate. Sellers get the second half: enter any two of selling price, cost and margin percent and the third solves itself, with margin and markup shown side-by-side so the two are never confused again.

Pick a preset from 5 to 50 percent or type any custom value, watch the sale hero update live, and test pricing scenarios in the margin section. Every calculation runs locally in your browser with no sign-up, and any scenario can be shared with a link.

The discount and margin formulas

sale=original×(1rate)\text{sale} = \text{original} \times (1 - \text{rate})
savings=originalsale\text{savings} = \text{original} - \text{sale}
margin=profitprice\text{margin} = \frac{\text{profit}}{\text{price}}
markup=profitcost\text{markup} = \frac{\text{profit}}{\text{cost}}

Percent-off scales the original by one minus the rate; margin and markup divide the same profit by different denominators — price for margin, cost for markup.

Rate as a decimal: 20% → 0.20.

How it works

  1. Enter the original price and pick a preset or custom discount percent.
  2. Read the sale price, you-save amount and effective discount.
  3. Sellers: enter any two of price, cost and margin percent.
  4. Compare margin vs markup side-by-side — same profit, different denominator.
  5. Edit any field; the stalest margin field re-solves, with a badge marking it.

Margin is profit ÷ PRICE, markup is profit ÷ COST

On price $100 with cost $70, profit is $30 either way — but margin is 30.00% while markup is 42.86%. Mixing the denominators is the #1 pricing error this tool prevents.

What v1 leaves out

No tax computation, no multi-item carts, no coupon stacking — percentages accept any 0–100 value. Follow-ups add carts and stacked promotions; tax belongs to the sales-tax tool.

Frequently asked questions

How is percent-off computed?

Sale equals original times one minus the rate: 20% off $100 is $80, saving $20. The effective discount echoes the percent you entered.

Margin vs markup — what's the difference?

Both divide the same profit: margin by selling price, markup by cost. A 30% margin on $100/$70 equals a 42.86% markup — the tool shows both together.

How does any-two-solves-third work?

Give any two of price, cost and margin and the third is derived algebraically. The least-recently-edited field solves, marked with a badge.

Why can't margin be 100%?

A 100% margin would mean zero cost with a positive price — dividing profit by zero cost has no finite price answer, so the tool shows an unsolvable hint instead of a number.

How accurate is this calculator?

Exact to the cent against the stated pipeline. Real checkouts add tax and stacked promotions that v1 does not model — read the receipt.
