This free calculator takes the restaurant bill, applies your tip percent to the pre-tax subtotal by default, adds any sales tax, and splits the total across the party — rounding each share UP to the cent and showing the few-cents remainder openly, so the table never argues about pennies.

The tip and split formulas

Tip is a straight percentage of the base (bill, plus tax only when toggled). The party share divides the total and rounds each share up so the collected amount always covers the bill — the overage is the remainder.

Tip on the pre-tax bill — the standard

By default the tip base is the pre-tax bill: tax is a pass-through to the authorities, not service to reward. Toggle ON only if your party genuinely tips on the tax-included total.

What v1 leaves out

No service-charge or auto-gratuity rules, no receipt scanning, no multi-currency — percentages are presets but any 0–100 value works. Follow-ups add house-policy handling.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip?

Customary ranges in the US run 15–20% for table service, 18–25% in big cities; 10% is the low end. The chips cover the standards — pick what the service earned.

Should I tip on the tax?

Standard practice says no: tip on the pre-tax subtotal, which is this tool's default. The toggle exists for parties that prefer tax-included tipping.

Why is there a remainder?

Splitting rarely divides evenly to the cent, so each share rounds up and the party overpays by a few cents. The remainder note shows exactly how much — usually under a dime.

Can I tip outside the presets?

Yes — type any percent from 0 to 100 in the custom field. Chips are shortcuts; the custom value always wins when they disagree.

How accurate is this calculator?

Exact to the cent against the stated pipeline. Real checks may include service charges or auto-gratuity that this v1 does not model — read the check first.
